I didn’t really truly know what this word meant but I had to find out when I started reading an interview article in the Sunday Times News Magazine on Mary Trump, daughter of Frederick Trump Jnr and niece to former president Donald Trump. She said that her uncle Donald was great at gaslighting himself; so having googled the meaning of the word, I discovered it meant that a person is great at manipulating another person and questioning their thoughts. Here are a couple of googled examples below:
“Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse that’s seen in abusive relationships. It’s the act of manipulating a person by forcing them to question their thoughts, memories, and the events occurring around them. A victim of gaslighting can be pushed so far that they question their own sanity.“
“What is an example of gaslighting?Gaslighting happens when an abuser tries to control a victim by twisting their sense of reality. An example of gaslighting would be a partner doing something abusive and then denying it happened. Gaslighters may also convince their victims that they’re mentally unfit or too sensitive“
Well her comment makes sense when referred to the events following last year’s November US Presidential Election.
